Recap iTx Working Group meeting at Jan De Nul (Sept 25)

What happens when indirect tax experts of InHouse Tax Forum meet at one of Belgium’s most impressive infrastructure companies?

Last Friday, 25 September, the IHTF Indirect Tax Working Group met at the Jan De Nul premises in Aalst-Hofstade. After a warm welcome beside the Dender, we were blown away by the company video and by the scale of Jan De Nul’s contribution to major infrastructure projects in Belgium and around the world.

Naturally, it did not take long before we found the VAT angle.

We discussed the Exclusive Economic Zone concept, composite versus single supplies, and revisited the CJEU’s Aktiebolaget NN case.

From this more traditional VAT debate, we moved directly into the future: digitalization, robotics, Power BI and AI. These technologies could fundamentally change the daily work of indirect tax experts. However, realizing their potential will require deeper AI knowledge, experimentation and, above all, the continued sharing of practical use cases and experiences within the tax community.

We also reviewed e-invoicing and e-reporting developments in Belgium, France and other countries. The discussion showed that businesses still face significant implementation roadblocks. Belgium’s future e-reporting requirements are also raising concerns, especially regarding data reconciliation and the gap between real-life invoice processing and regulatory expectations for near real-time reporting.

Our final session focused on optimizing VAT receivables and discussing the results of the IHTF poll.

Many thanks to the Jan De Nul team for the excellent hospitality, to the speakers for sharing their expertise, and to all participants for the lively and thought-provoking exchanges.

This is what IHTF is about: connecting people, sharing experience, building knowledge, challenging regulatory developments and contributing to better policymaking.

Thanks to our sponsors for their continued support: Tiberghien Lawyers, Comarch, Loctax, Leyton and VAT Consult,
